Little Darby Creek Wetland Enhancement
West Jefferson, Ohio | Wetland Enhancement | Precision Grading | Native Planting | Floodplain Habitat
Environmental Remediation Contractor (ERC) served as the prime contractor for a wetland enhancement project along the Little Darby Creek corridor near West Jefferson, Ohio.
The goal was to improve wetland habitat by building varied wetland ground and establishing native plant communities, while protecting the surrounding floodplain.
ERC self-performed the work and finished on schedule, including approved change orders. Final grades and site stabilization were approved.

What Is Wetland Enhancement?
Wetland enhancement improves an existing wetland area so it supports more habitat and functions better. Here, that meant reshaping the ground and replacing what was growing with native wetland and upland plants.
How Was the Wetland Topography Built?
ERC stripped and redistributed topsoil, excavated 5,380 cubic yards, and precision-graded the site to the designed elevations.
Crews built wetland pools, bottoms, slopes, and hummocks, and managed excess soil off site.
Why Was Drainage Tile Investigated?
Many former farm fields have buried drainage tile that can quietly drain a wetland. ERC investigated the tile on site so it wouldn’t undermine the restored wetland’s ability to hold water.
How Was the Site Planted?
ERC seeded 12.3 acres with wetland and upland mixes and planted 1,615 bare-root trees, container trees, shrubs, and wetland plugs.
Why Was This Project Complex?
ERC had to manage several conditions at once:
- Precision grading to design elevations
- Drainage tile investigation
- Topsoil stripping and redistribution
- Off-site soil management
- Floodplain protection
- Change orders delivered without delaying completion
