Former Chrome Facility Hazardous Waste Landfill Remediation
Cleveland, Ohio | Chromium Remediation | Hazardous Waste Landfill | Dewatering & Water Treatment | Site Restoration
Environmental Remediation Contractor (ERC) remediated a closed hazardous waste landfill at a former hard chrome plating facility in Cleveland, Ohio.
The site held chromium-impacted debris, sludge, and water. Everything had to be removed, treated, or stabilized safely, and the property restored for future redevelopment.
ERC excavated approximately 2,800 tons of material, showed that much of it was non-hazardous to lower disposal costs, treated chromium-impacted water on site, and restored the property to grade.
Project at a Glance
- Location: Cleveland, Ohio
- Client: State environmental agency
- Design Engineer: Environmental consulting firm
- Contractor: Environmental Remediation Contractor (ERC)
Key Project Results
- Approximately 2,800 tons of construction and demolition material excavated
- Much of the material proven non-hazardous, lowering disposal costs
- Chromium-impacted water treated on site before backfill
- Saturated material stabilized with Calciment
- 20-mil liner and geo-grid installed under backfill
- Site restored with clean gravel fill and an asphalt patch
What Was the Problem at This Former Chrome Facility?
The property had a closed hazardous waste landfill holding chromium-impacted debris and sludge from past plating operations. Impacted water had also collected in the excavation area.
How Did ERC Lower Disposal Costs?
Hazardous waste disposal is expensive, so sorting matters. ERC carefully separated clean fill from hazardous waste and ran a non-hazardous demonstration showing that much of the excavated material didn’t need hazardous disposal.
That allowed a large share of the 2,800 tons to go to more cost-effective disposal.
How Was Chromium-Impacted Water Treated?
Dewatering pulled impacted water and sludge from the excavation. ERC treated the chromium-impacted water with oxidizing chemicals and mechanical mixing before backfill. Basement walls and foundations were pressure-washed, and all rinse water was sampled and disposed of properly.
How Was the Site Rebuilt for Long-Term Stability?
Saturated material was stabilized with Calciment. ERC placed a 20-mil liner at the base of the backfill for added protection, then installed geo-grid for long-term stability.
The site was brought back to grade with clean gravel fill and finished with an asphalt patch.
Why Was This Project Complex?
ERC had to manage several conditions at once:
- Closed hazardous waste landfill
- Chromium-impacted debris, sludge, and water
- Waste segregation and non-hazardous demonstration
- Dewatering and on-site water treatment
- Stabilization of saturated material
- Liner and geo-grid installation
