Redevelopment Site TCE Soil & Groundwater Remediation
Cleveland, Ohio | TCE Remediation | In-Situ Soil Treatment | Groundwater Injections | Brownfield Redevelopment
Environmental Remediation Contractor (ERC) was selected as the contractor to remediate a redevelopment site in Cleveland, Ohio.
Past use of the property had left trichloroethylene (TCE) in both the soil and the groundwater. The goal was to bring contaminant levels down so the site could be safely redeveloped.
ERC treated the impacted soil in place, stabilized it to support future construction, injected groundwater treatment across 8,500 square feet, and left the site graded and seeded for mixed-use development.
Project at a Glance
- Location: Cleveland, Ohio
- Client: County land reutilization corporation
- Design Engineer: Environmental consulting firm
- Contractor: Environmental Remediation Contractor (ERC)
Key Project Results
- Upper 6 feet of soil removed and stockpiled
- TCE-impacted soil treated in place from 6 to 12 feet below grade
- Treated soil stabilized with Calciment and compacted
- Groundwater injections across 8,500 square feet, up to 20 feet deep
- Site graded and seeded, ready for mixed-use redevelopment
What Is TCE?
TCE (trichloroethylene) is an industrial solvent once common in degreasing and manufacturing. It can move through soil into groundwater and break down into other harmful compounds, so cleanups often have to address both.
What Is In-Situ Soil Treatment?
In-situ means treating contamination in place, without digging it up and hauling it away. It can cut disposal costs and truck traffic.
ERC removed and stockpiled the top six feet of soil, then treated the TCE-impacted soil from 6 to 12 feet below ground with a chemical and biological treatment.
How Was the Treated Soil Made Ready for Construction?
After treatment, the soil was stabilized with Calciment and compacted so it could support future buildings.
How Was the Groundwater Treated?
ERC ran a direct-push injection program that delivered treatment into the groundwater, targeting TCE and its breakdown products. Injections reached up to 20 feet deep across an 8,500-square-foot area.
How Was the Site Protected During the Work?
All work included utility protection, dust suppression, and strict compliance with health, safety, and regulatory standards. Once remediation was complete, the site was graded and seeded.
Why Was This Project Complex?
ERC had to manage several conditions at once:
- TCE in both soil and groundwater
- In-situ treatment at depth
- Soil stabilization for future construction
- Direct-push groundwater injections
- Utility protection
- Dust control on an urban site
