Former Firing Range Lead Soil Remediation
Granville, Ohio | Lead Soil Remediation | In-Situ Lead Fixation | Firing Range Cleanup | Site Restoration
Environmental Remediation Contractor (ERC) served as general contractor for lead soil remediation at a former firing range in Granville, Ohio.
Years of shooting had left lead in the soil. The goal was to stabilize leachable lead where needed, remove impacted soil for disposal, and return the site to its intended use, while protecting the nearby community.
ERC treated about 1,000 tons of soil in place, removed roughly 8,000 tons for disposal, placed 5,000 tons of backfill, and restored the site with topsoil and seed.
Project at a Glance
- Location: Granville, Ohio
- Client: County land reutilization corporation
- Design Engineer: Environmental engineering firm
- General Contractor: Environmental Remediation Contractor (ERC)
Key Project Results
- Approximately 1,000 tons of lead-impacted soil treated in place
- Roughly 8,000 tons of non-hazardous lead-impacted soil removed and disposed
- About 5,000 tons of backfill imported, placed, and compacted
- New perimeter fencing installed
- Site restored with topsoil, seed, and mulch
Why Do Firing Ranges Need Lead Soil Cleanup?
Bullets and shot leave lead in the soil over time. Before a former range can be reused, that lead has to be stabilized or removed so it doesn’t leach into groundwater or expose people.
What Is In-Situ Lead Fixation?
In-situ fixation treats lead in place by mixing in an amendment that binds it, so it won’t leach. Treated soil can often be disposed of as non-hazardous waste, which lowers cost.
ERC treated approximately 1,000 tons of lead-impacted soil this way.
How Was the Community Protected?
Work was sequenced to put community safety first. ERC used dust control, safe truck routing, erosion and sediment controls, and daily housekeeping. Everything ran under a project-specific Health and Safety Plan with air monitoring and decontamination.
How Was Lead-Impacted Soil Removed?
Field screening and historical data set the excavation limits. ERC excavated, loaded, and hauled roughly 8,000 tons of non-hazardous lead-impacted soil to permitted facilities, with waste profiling and manifest tracking for every load.
How Was the Site Restored?
ERC placed and compacted about 5,000 tons of backfill, completed rough and finish grading to restore drainage, installed new perimeter fencing, and finished with topsoil, seed, and mulch.
Why Was This Project Complex?
ERC had to manage several conditions at once:
- Lead impacts from a former firing range
- In-situ treatment and excavation in one scope
- Community protection and truck routing
- Air monitoring and dust control
- Waste profiling and manifest tracking
- Full site restoration
