Walhonding Watershed Stream & Wetland Rehabilitation

Knox County, Ohio | Stream Rehabilitation | Wetland Mitigation | Ecological Earthwork | Soil Restoration

Environmental Remediation Contractor (ERC) served as the prime restoration contractor for a stream and wetland rehabilitation project in a county park in Knox County, Ohio.

The project provides compensatory mitigation within the Walhonding Watershed. It required precise grading, hydrologic connections, soil restoration, and erosion control, all built to the issued restoration design.

ERC completed the full awarded scope, including the wetland microtopography, stream features, soil work, and the construction documentation the mitigation project required.

Project at a Glance

  • Location: Knox County, Ohio
  • Client: National conservation nonprofit
  • Owner: County park district
  • Design Consultant: Ecological design consultant
  • Prime Restoration Contractor: Environmental Remediation Contractor (ERC)
  • Contract Value: over $85,000

Key Project Results

  • 100 wetland hummocks and hollows constructed
  • 2 restoration swales graded
  • 1 riffle crossing and 1 rock check dam built
  • 300 square yards of erosion-control matting installed
  • 1.5 acres of temporary seed and straw
  • As-built survey and permanent photo stations delivered

What Is Compensatory Mitigation?

When development affects streams or wetlands, regulations often require that equal or greater value be restored somewhere else in the same watershed. That’s compensatory mitigation.

This project restores stream and wetland function in the Walhonding Watershed to meet those goals.

What Are Wetland Hummocks and Hollows?

Hummocks are small raised mounds, and hollows are shallow low spots. Together they create the uneven ground found in natural wetlands, with varied water depths that support a wider range of plants and wildlife.

ERC built 100 of them across the restoration area.

How Did ERC Restore the Stream and Wetland?

ERC cleared and grubbed the site, built a riffle crossing and rock check dam, graded two swales, and restored streambanks. Soil was prepared and decompacted, and excess soil was hauled off site.

Disturbed areas were stabilized with erosion-control matting and temporary seed and straw.

What Documentation Do Mitigation Projects Require?

Mitigation sites are monitored for years after construction, so accurate records matter. ERC provided construction coordination, quality control, as-built survey data, and permanent photo stations required by the contract.

Why Was This Project Complex?

ERC had to manage several conditions at once:

  • Precise grading to the restoration design
  • Hydrologic connections to the existing stream
  • Wetland microtopography
  • Soil decompaction and restoration
  • Off-site soil management
  • Mitigation documentation requirements

Who Builds Stream and Wetland Mitigation Projects in Ohio?

Mitigation work should be built by contractors who can grade precisely, understand restoration designs, and deliver the documentation regulators expect.

ERC builds stream and wetland mitigation projects for conservation organizations, park districts, public agencies, and ecological consultants across Ohio and the region.

What Services Did ERC Provide on This Project?

  • Stream Rehabilitation
  • Wetland Rehabilitation
  • Ecological Earthwork
  • Riffle and Check Dam Construction
  • Soil Preparation and Decompaction
  • Erosion and Sediment Control
  • Temporary Seeding and Stabilization
  • As-Built Survey and Photo Station Installation

Need a Contractor for a Mitigation Project?

Environmental Remediation Contractor builds stream and wetland mitigation to design, with the quality control and documentation these projects require.

ERC works with conservation organizations, public agencies, park districts, engineers, and ecological consultants to turn restoration designs into working habitat.
